I don’t recognize the number. I glance back at Gillian. She’s asleep, so it can’t be her.

That means it must be Steve. He’s trying to scare me. And because I know what he’s capable of, it’s working. Because there’s a chance that he doesn’t want me back at all.

He might want revenge.

JAMES

3 November

It was just before midnight when I heard a stone on my window.

“James. James!” She whispered my name—but then shrieked when I opened the curtains. “Christ, let me in.”

A minute later, we were kissing on my single mattress. I was tearing at her clothes, but just when I was about to reach inside her pants, she pulled away.

“I can’t. He knows I’ve gone for a walk.”

“I won’t take long,” I panted, only slightly ashamed at my desperation.

“Down, boy.” She stood up and kissed me one last time. “Leave your window open. I’ll come as soon as I can.”

“Tomorrow?”

“I can’t promise.” There was a spark in her eye, something unsettled and dangerous. “Only when it’s safe.”

And then she was gone, before I could protest, before I could seduce her, before I could do anything to control the situation.

4 November

I’m on my mattress with my window open, waiting for her.

It’s two o’clock.

Now, three o’clock.

Now, four o’clock.

I may as well get up.

I can’t sleep without touching her again. What would my life be like if she regretted what we did and never returned?

She’s using me. I hate her. I love her. I need her.

5 November

Robert yelled at me twice today; Klaus, six times. I have no energy to fight back. I’m a zombie. I want to sleep, but when night comes, I realize I won’t get any sleep again, not until I see her.

She arrived earlier than I thought, sliding through the open window.

“It’s freezing in here,” she said, immediately removing her top. “Warm me up again.”

We lay awake afterward, whispering, but she didn’t say much about her past. We dozed for a few hours and made love again just before dawn. We clung to each other as though we were starved.

“You better go,” I told her as she started to fall asleep. “Robert will be here soon.”

“Screw him.”

“I’m a bit spent, actually.”

She laughed. “Don Juan can’t go another round?”

“Don’t call me that,” I complained. “It’s not like I tricked you.”

“No, it’s not that,” she replied, getting dressed.

“What is it, then?”

The question landed in the room with a thud, and I immediately regretted it. She kept dressing, and it wasn’t until she was standing by the window that she responded.

“It’s an escape,” she said.

When she left, I was… what would the poets say? Bereft?

Not in control, anyway.

And as Robert told me at work, there was only a month and a half until Christmas.

I need to push forward with V. Make her see a future with me without scaring her away. It won’t be easy. Despite everything, I’m still just a worthless laborer. She could cast me off without much effort. I don’t know if I’m her first affair or her tenth.

To be honest, I don’t know anything about her.
